One of a kind, absolutely unique clutch pencil. Clutch pencils, or lead holders, are one of the oldest forms of writing instruments around, dating back hundreds of years. So there a touch of poetry that this Rankaku Clutch Pencil has been finished using a technique that is over 9000 years old, Urushi Lacquering.
Rankaku was the Urushi technique used to create the one-of-a-kind Clutch Pencil. Uniquely with the Rankaku technique the white you see is real eggshell. The eggshell is broken, individually shaped and then embedded into the lacquered surface of the piece. Over the following weeks and for this piece, months, the surface is coated in successive layers of lacquer. Then the surface is sanded back and polished to reveal the unique modern mosaic. For more info on this incredible technique and Urushi in general check out my 'About Urushi' section.
