Part of my Modern Mosaics Kim Collection
Rankaku and Kim were the Urushi techniques used to create these earrings. Uniquely with the Rankaku technique the white you see is real eggshell. The eggshell is broken, individually shaped and then embedded into the lacquered surface of the piece. Over the following weeks the surface is coated in successive layers of lacquer. Then the surface is sanded back and polished to reveal the unique modern mosaic.
The final step with these exquisite earrings is the careful application of gold leaf, this Urushi technique is called Kim, and has been used for 1000s of years to show beauty, preciousness, love and devotion. Gold Leaf dates back to before the Egyptians. They used it to adorn sculptures and coated the tombs of the deceased Pharaoh's. In Greece, gold leaf was used to decorate accents of statues. In Japan, gold leaf has been used in conjunction with other Urushi Techniques since its discovery. As with all my pieces I take an ancient traditional technique and honour it by using is in a contemporary context.
