Shiwa-Nur was the Urushi technique I used for these earrings. Uniquely with Shiwa-nur a special, thicker lacquer, Kuro-roiro is applied undiluted. Interestingly when placed in the furo, this lacquer acts differently. While absorbing moisture from the air the lacquer contracts and forms black undulations or wrinkles. These wrinkles are what dictate the pattern. I then build upon this over weeks, by adding successive layers of differently coloured lacquer. For more info on this incredible technique and Urushi in general check out my 'About Urushi' section. .
